April 15 Special Collection: Read USA

Read USA was created by Ellen Wiss and teacher Vanessa Tussey at George Washington Carver Elementary School when she realized that the students had never had a book fair. This spring, through the fundraising efforts of READ USA every student in six of the highest poverty elementary schools in Duval County Public Schools will be given a $15 gift certificate to purchase books of their choice before summer vacation. Ellen will share with us the mission of READ USA and ways UUCJ can support this effort.

February Special Collection: Habijax

The February 18 recipient of our Special Collection will be Habijax. In addition to offering them monetary support, we can also help by participating in the “HabiJax 30th Anniversary Interfaith Build.” Diverse people of faith from all across Jacksonville will be coming together in March to help build a home. Led by an experienced Team Leader, volunteers will work on projects such as house wrap, window install, caulking, vinyl siding, painting, landscaping, laying sod, and cleaning for pre-carpet and final punch. A typical day begins with check-in at 7:45am and concludes at 3:00pm. If you are interested, please sign up here: http://cerv.is/m?0247rFaith2018
